How to make sure electricity is connected in your new home
As a first home owner, moving into your new place for the first time is a big moment. Nothing can ruin it more than switching on the light and realising you don’t have any electricity. You can’t see at night, your showers are cold, and you can’t watch TV. To avoid this catastrophe, there are a few simple things you should do.
Call your current electricity provider ahead of time and let them know you’re planning to move. You will need to give them your new address and a connection date. Ask whether your new property already has a connection or if you have to pay for a new one. If the electricity is already connected, ask your provider to transfer that current contract to your new home.
How long will it take?
Most companies will connect your home within three business days. If the electricity is already connected, and you’re just transferring the old account to your new home, you may only have to wait one day.
Check your location
If you live in NSW, VIC or QLD, check whether you’re moving into a new distribution network. If you are, then you can’t carry over your current contract in those states. This means that you will have to find a new provider.
If you want to choose a new electricity provider, it’s a good idea to compare price and plans, while also checking out customer reviews to make sure you’re getting the best deal. If you find one, make sure you cancel the contract you have with your current provider.
Fees and charges
Your provider may charge you a connection or disconnection fee, but there are usually no fees if your new house is already connected. If you are ending a contract early, then you may have to pay early exit fees. However, most providers don’t charge these.
